TEXTILE OBSERVATIONS WHERE PEHR KALM TRAVELLED

North East U.S. and South East Canada

iPROJECT Written by Viveka Hansen | Photographed by The IK Foundation

The Bridge Builder Expedition – North America has as a subproject looked closer into Pehr Kalm’s observations of the fur trade and its complex networks in the North American Colonies.

THE FUR TRADE IN THE NORTH AMERICAN COLONIES – OBSERVATIONS OF A MID-18TH CENTURY TRAVELLER
This sixth article from North America will focus on the Finnish/Swedish naturalist Pehr Kalm’s studies of the fur trade throughout his stay and travels in the colonies from 1748 to 1751, together with a brief discussion of the well-documented trades’ long and complex history. His journeys by foot, horse, coach and boat passed through the present day Province of Quebec in Canada and the U.S. states Pennsylvania, New York, Delaware and New Jersey. The aim with this “Textile Thought” is to present this lucrative trade from the eyes of Kalm through journals followed up with own observations learned from the research project – Bridge Builder Expedition – North America – in the summer of 2014  | > 2300 MORE WORDS

Viveka Hansen has published five further historical texts based on research of 17th to 19th century textile traditions in areas of the present day North East U.S. and South East Canada. The majority of the observations have connections to the exact geographical areas where Pehr Kalm travelled from 1748 to 1751.
