Studied natural history and
social history in the southern reaches of Africa. When in what
is now Cape Town, he was asked to join James Cook on his second
circumnavigation of the earth (1772-1775). Two boats were used
for the expedition, Resolution and Adventure. His work involved
helping with research and mapping the Southern Ocean, Australia,
Oceania and South America.

National Museum of Ethnography. His travel diaries were published
