CONTENT: | This illustrative engraving dated 1751, shows transport via sedan chairs in London – which is an enlightening comparison to the naturalist Pehr Kalm’s observations just three years earlier. On a summers day in June 1748, his travel journal focused on ‘Various little conveniences in London’. At a time when Kalm had stayed in the metropolis and surrounding counties for more than four month, his knowledge about the complex regulations connected to city carriages and sedan chairs had undoubtedly expanded from own experience. Overall he informed about the easy access to carriages on all main streets drawn by one or two pairs of horses, fixed fees from one place to another, number of passengers, transport of luggage, hire for a full day and much more. Of particular interest in connection to this coloured engraving he registered: ‘In a number of places, especially on the western side of the city, where the king lives, one sees an abundance of sedan chairs, which are available for payment, as one wishes, there always being men on hand to carry them.‘ |
