CONTENT: | The Linnaeus’ apostle Daniel Solander, participated as a botanist along with Joseph Banks on James Cook’s first voyage from August 1768 to July 1771. The company’s experience of music and dance on Ulietea [Raiatea] in 1769, is shown here in the artist Sydney Parkinson’s representation, taken from John Hawkesworth’s three-volume work which covered official government expeditions and included records from Cook’s first voyage. Plate No. VII in volume two is a clear example of the fact that women’s as well as men’s clothing was made from the locally produced bark cloths (illustrated with a touch of “Europeanisation”). However, Solander did not keep a travel journal, but such cloths were described by Banks, Cook and Parkinson from the entire Polynesian region. |
