| CONTENT: | The smaller of the two parrots mentioned by Sparrman is the Red-Crowned Parakeet (Cyanoramphus novaezelandiae). Museum Carlsonianum is an illustrated book in four volumes, with descriptions and paintings of 100 selected specimens in the private collection of Gustaf von Carlson (1743-1801). The Red-Crowned Parakeet appears on plate 28 in volume 2. von Carlson had at least one, possibly two, specimens, but only one appears to have been sent to the Swedish Royal Academy of Sciences after von Carlson’s death. This specimen was later passed on to the Swedish Museum of Natural History where it still remains. It is likely, but not explicitly stated, that Sparrman collected these birds himself. George Forster, another naturalist onboard, shot at least two specimens in Dusky Bay [= Dusky Sound], one on 2 April and one on 17 April, and at least three other specimen was shot by him at later occasions. |
